South African sisters ride for rhinos

first_img10 July 2015Two sisters from Cape Town, Vanessa and Victoria Wiesenmaier, are cycling 6 000km from China to Singapore to save rhinos. They set off in April, and yesterday were speeding along the Mekong. They have called their campaign Buy No Rhino, taken from the Wildaid slogan: “When the buying stops, the killing can too.”“We will be travelling through Vietnam, China and Thailand, the main consumer markets driving the demand for rhino horn,” say the sisters. “Especially in these countries we want to reach the people! Even if we cannot change a whole culture, we will sow a seed of change.”Only with demand reduction will the rhino have a chance of survival, say Vanessa (30) and Victoria (35).Extinction threatThe two African rhino species, the black rhino and the white rhino, are threatened by poaching. If the development of the past years continues it is expected that the rhino will become extinct in the near future. The war against rhino poaching will be won in Asia, not in Africa, they say of their decision to take the fight to the market. The poaching of rhinos has reached a crisis point, they say. Designed to raise awareness of the plight of the rhino, the Buy No Rhino Bike Tour, is taking the sisters through China, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia and, finally, Singapore. Along the way, they are urging consumers to stop buying rhino horn.Vietnam, China and Thailand are the main consumer markets for rhino horn. For their campaign, the Wiesenmaiers are working with Project Rhino KZN, partners of the Kingsley Holgate Foundation, to educate youth in hopes of curbing the demand for rhino horn.In Vietnam, the sisters teamed-up with Operation Game Change, a joint alliance between the governments of the United States and Vietnam aimed at ending wildlife crime, especially rhino horn.Save our rhinosThey give presentations at various stages along the way, promoting discussion on rhino poaching, rhino horn trafficking and how to stop the global urgent issue. They are also rolling out a Rhino Art project at schools and collecting signatures for the World Youth Wildlife Declaration, which will be presented to the Cites 2016 summit in Cape Town.According to the South African Department of Environmental Affairs, the number of rhinos poached in South Africa is spiking, with 1 215 poached in 2014 – up from 1 004 in 2013 and 668 in 2012. Operation Game Change says this is a rise from just 122 rhinos poached five years earlier. The Wiesenmaiers said the poaching of rhinoceroses was gruesome, Voice of America reported. Poachers tranquilised the animal and then cut off the horn. When the rhino woke up it slowly bled to death. In Asia, consumers buy horn products they believe cure everything from cancer to hangovers. At tens of thousands of dollars per kilogram, the horns are a luxury item sometimes given to bosses and officials. “To know that these animals are killed for pure greed and money, for some funny belief that the horn is a status symbol, that’s a tragedy,’ said Victoria.Personal issueSpeaking from the Laos-Vietnam border, she told Voice of America the issue was personal. A friend in South Africa had four of the six rhinos on his reservation slaughtered; he decided to leave the carcasses out so that people could see the results of poaching.“We saw live rhinos before that, so to see this crumbled, dead thing, it was really shocking, it was disgusting.”Vietnam is the biggest consumer of rhino horns in the world, and on their journey, Vanessa and Victoria are targeting schools, where they give a presentation about the harms of the horn trade, hold a discussion and then have students create artwork on the topic. It is hoped the children will be more open-minded and pass on the message to their parents. Vietnamese businessmen, celebrities, and state officials are “the strongest driver of the current rhino poaching crisis”, according to a 2013 report by wildlife group Traffic.South Africa and Vietnam are the key countries involved in the supply and demand sides of the rhino trade, respectively.SAinfo reporterlast_img read more

CES 2018: First Look at Panasonic’s New Lumix GH5S

first_imgAt CES 2018, Panasonic unveiled its new Lumix GH5S with an updated sensor, new Cinema 4K capabilities, and additional improvements.Fresh off the CES presses, Panasonic’s new Lumix GH5S has leaked online after much much rumor and fanfare. The predecessor to Panasonic’s popular Lumix GH5, the antecedent’s update looks to be a truly video-forward mirrorless camera that will compete with Canon and Sony in 2018. While the GH5 was a strong offering at its price point (currently around $2,000), the GH5S should stay competitive with updated capabilities at a similar opening price point (rumored to be around $2,500).New SensorWhile the GH5 boasted a powerful 20.3MP Micro Four Thirds Live MOS sensor, Panasonic has announced that the GH5S will feature a new 10.2MP multi-aspect sensor, which should improve max ISO capabilities up into the 51,200 range (while the GH5’s ceiling was around 25,600). The new sensor will also provide sufficient margin to get the same angle of view in 4:3, 17:9, 16:9, and 3:2 aspect ratios.Record Cinema 4K at 60/50pPerhaps the biggest headline for the GH5S’s advanced capabilities is the camera’s ability to record Cinema 4K footage at 60/50p. This is a major improvement and certainly a first in the market at this price point. The GH5S also now offers better color reproduction with new internal 4:2:2 10-bit recording capabilities with pre-installed V-Log (no longer an add-on purchase). Full HD and 4K video recording compiles with 4K HDR video with Hybrid Log Gamma (HLG) for unlimited recording capabilities as well.Full List of ImprovementsFor those interested, the lightweight body will remain the same, but several other updates and improvements (many the result of the new sensor), will increase the GH5S’s capabilities for both video and photography as Panasonic’s affordable 4K play will undoubtedly send ripples throughout the industry well after CES ends.Atomos recently got their hands on the new model, testing its new capabilities.Enjoy saturated colours and capture sparkling shots even when shooting in V-Log format in the dimmest conditions. Colours are rich and deep even in super low light and reds are really red. Huge amounts of colour information are retained with 10-bit. This technological advance puts paid to the widespread assumption that you should never shoot Log in low light with mirrorless cameras because of excess noise. Now you can get the full benefits of a wider dynamic range and punchy colours and enjoy a clean image while staying in Panasonic’s V-Log, giving you a greater ability to manipulate your image in post-production.Specs:10.2MP multi-aspect sensor4:3, 17:9, 16:9, and 3:2 aspect ratios4K 60/50p recording in Cinema 4K (4,096 x 2,160)Max ISO 51,200 ceilingInternal 4:2:2 10-bit recording with pre-installed V-LogDual Native ISO TechnologyThe 225-area AF arrangement and light levels as low as -5EVReported Price: $2,500 (body only)last_img read more

Department of Mental Health and Substance Dependence on Depression

first_imgFacebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsAppProvidenciales, 12 Nov 2014 – Magnetic Media reached out to the Department of Mental Health and Substance Dependence in light of the recent tragedies where Turks and Caicos families are suffering losses of loved ones due to emotional or mental challenges… two suicides this year within the country; two mothers characterized as having postpartum depression and two little children hurt; one, a six year old killed in the Cayman Islands; dying according to the autopsy due to stab wounds allegedly by her mother … another, a now 7-month old, comatose, nearly drowned in a Florida canal allegedly by his mother. For a small island nation, it is alarming to learn of cases of depression and mood disorders from our department and yet Dr Alicia Malcolm explained: “Today, depression is estimated to affect 350 million people around the world. Here in the Turks and Caicos Islands, it is the second leading mental disorder for which treatment is sought. Over the past three months, approximately 32 cases of a Major Depressive/Mood Disorder have been reported to the Department of Mental Health and Substance Dependence.” The Dept, which falls under Health and Human services called their treatment regimen effective… and there were tips given on what to look out for, signals that something is not right. I quote from that press statement today: “Anybody who expresses suicidal thoughts or intentions should be taken very seriously. Warning signs that someone may be thinking about or planning to commit suicide include the following: Always talking or thinking about death; Clinical depression — deep sadness, loss of interest, trouble sleeping and eating — that gets worse; Having a “death wish,” tempting fate by taking risks that could lead to death, such as driving fast or running red lights; Losing interest in things one used to care about; Making comments about being hopeless, helpless, or worthless; Putting affairs in order, tying up loose ends, changing a will; Saying things like “it would be better if I wasn’t here” or “I want out”; Sudden, unexpected switch from being very sad to being very calm or appearing to be happy; Talking about suicide or killing one’s self and if someone you know and love is Visiting or calling people to say goodbye then, says Dr Malcolm that could also be an indicator. Late Tuesday, the nation was stunned by news that 33 year old Grand Turk native and Florida resident Inakesha Brooks-Armour committed suicide. The mother, who had been held in the case of her son Cayden Armour was said to be suffering PPD, and one day before facing the formal charges in a South Florida courtroom, she is believed to have intentionally overdose on meds. Ripgrep 0100 released with PCRE2 and multiline search support

first_imgThe Ripgrep team released a minor version Ripgrep 0.10.0 last week. It explores features such as PCRE2 support, multi-line search and a JSON output format among other minor updates. Ripgrep is a command line search tool that recursively searches your current directory for a regex pattern while respecting your gitignore rules. It offers first class support on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Major Updates The minimum version which was required to compile Rust has been changed to track the latest stable version of Rust. The new minor versions will be using the current stable version of the Rust compile as its minimum supported version. Ripgrep 0.10.0 has now got libripgrep which helps with fast searching over arbitrary streams of data.  A new feature offering multi-line support has been added, which allows matching over multiple lines. There’s another new feature PCRE2 and JSON Lines format. The PCRE2 feature provides support for look-around and backreferences ( match the same text as previously matched by a capturing group ) and JSON lines format makes use of –json flag which helps print results in that format. Other changes A –one-file-system flag has been added to skip directories on different file systems. Two new minor features namely –sort and –sortr flag have been added for more sorting. –crlf flag is added in Ripgrep 0.10.0 to permit $ to work with carriage returns on Windows. A –null-data flag has been added to ripgrep 0.10.0 that makes ripgrep use NUL as a line terminator. –line-buffered and –block-buffered have been added for forcing a buffer strategy. A –pre-glob feature has been added for filtering files through the –pre flag. Bug Fixes A bug in ignore crate, where first path was treated as a symlink, has been fixed in ripgrep 0.10.0. Compile time and runtime CPU features have been added to –version output. ripgrep is more robust now when it comes to memory maps failing. For more information, check out the official ripgrep 0.10.0 release notes. Read Next Arduino now has a command line interface (CLI) Command Line Tools for DevOps Command-Line Toolslast_img read more

Experiences beyond expectation with Explorations by Collette

first_img Posted by Travelweek Group Friday, November 9, 2018 ‘Experiences beyond expectation’ with Explorations by Collette Tags: Collettecenter_img TORONTO — Collette’s Explorations was so popular as a travel style, it made perfect sense to spin it off into its own stand-alone brand. Now clients can reap the benefits of this immersive, authentic approach to vacations. Now known as Explorations by Collette, the brand was the focus of a special industry event last night, offering agents in attendance everything from henna applications, to a quick lesson in truffle rolling, to libations in the form of pisco sours, a drink clients can discover on the Explorations by Collette itinerary ‘Machu Picchu & the Galapagos Islands’.Explorations by Collette is “small group travel, reinvented” and is a dedicated program with maximum group sizes topping out at 19, down from 24. Most groups actually average 15 travellers, says Stephanie Mirando, Collette’s Senior Marketing Manager, North America Trade Partnerships. The brand was officially launched in August 2018, with more than 20 Explorations by Collette trips, each one focusing on “hyper-local” experiences. When Explorations by Collette was introduced, Collette CEO Dan Sullivan summed up the brand’s ethos this way: “Over the last 100 years, we’ve learned a lot about what works on tour and we’re excited to add this breadth of product to Collette’s offerings. Whether it’s hunting for truffles in southern France, a home-hosted meal in Morocco, or an overnight in a glass igloo in northern Finland, our guests can now connect to destinations in an entirely different way.”The list of Explorations by Collette tours runs the gamut from ‘Colors of Morocco’ to ‘Italy’s Bella Vita’, ‘Mysteries of India’, ‘The Plains of Africa’ and ‘Costa Rica: A World of Nature’.At last night’s event, Mirando says one particularly special Explorations by Collette itinerary is ‘Switzerland: Hidden Trails & Majestic Peaks’, notable for its method of transportation – not by motorcoach, but by Switzerland’s famous rail system.
