UFC Conquest: ‘My Success Will Inspire Nigerian Youths into Stardom’

first_imgAll hail King Kamaru Usman, the new dominant figure in the Welterweight category in one of the most brutal sport a man can think about. The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). The sport is an American mixed martial arts promotion company based in Las Vegas, Nevada, that is owned and operated by parent company William Morris Endeavor. Moments after the Nigerian overpowered number one in the category, American Tyron Woodley, to become the first African to win a belt in the deadly sport, Usman via a telephone conversation put together by DSTv bares his mind to Femi Solaja on what he wants to attain after the conquestBackground The Nigerian-American fighter was born in Auchi, Edo State. His father was in the Nigerian army and at about eight years old, he migrated with his family to United States. He started wrestling in his sophomore year in high school, at Bowie High School in Arlinton, Texas and achieved a record of 53-3 in high school wrestling and thereafter continued his career at Williams Penn University and laterUniversity of Nebraska where he attained more glory but his journey changed when he met former champion, Rashae Heaven who encouraged him to switch to martial art sport and today the rest is history. Although Usman admitted that he could not speak his native dialect, that did not translate to total disconnect with the Nigerian background because he still communicates with families and friends in broken English rather than the fluent American slangs most young men and women in his category embraced. “I left the country when I was very young and that was a great disconnect but my parents encourage me and I’m happy that the Nigerian blood in me is very thick and I hope to go higher with it.“I am a fan of many Nigerian artistes like Olamide, Davido, Wiz Kid and many more whom I listen to their musics during my pastimes instead of numerous R&B famous artistes here in America.“My daughter, Famirah Usman is my major inspiration of this conquest. Before now she has always watched my fights on television but because of the importance of last weekend bout in my life, I gave her a seat at the ring side and behold she motivated me to victory. This explained why I brought her to the ring to be part of the success story in my life,” he explained.Next LevelUntil recently when DSTv through one of its dedicated channels, SuperSports 226 started airing series, UFC looks more like an alien sport. However, as Usman continued to hit the limelight winning many battles just like few other Nigerian in the mix, the sport is beginning to gain recognition in the society especially among the youths.“My sport is a brutal one and it’s survival of the fittest. Only the strong stay alive to tell his story. I have adapted to it because if many critics say it’s too bloody and scary, it is the wildness that makes it entertaining to many of us. To stay alive you have to crush your opponent to submission and I’m happy that most of my injuries are not fatal.“After attaining greatness in my category and for a long time I want to retain the belt. However, my ultimate goal is to bring as many Nigerians as possible into this sport. As the most populous black nation I think we have many potentials that could fit into our sport. “Our youths naturally strong and bold to attain greatness and instead of wasting away, it will be a good development if they chanel their energy into a useful venture instead of restiveness that they have been known for,” he pointed out.He strongly believes in the next few years, UFC will have its own fair share of the market on the continent of Africa and that is one cross he is ready to carry when he comes visiting in the next few months.“So far, all my achievements have been self-motivated but for me to expand my coast, I need to meet with Nigerian government both at state and national levels, set up academies and other related projects that will help in the development of the sport locally,” Usman remarked. While the much-advertised fight between former welterweight boxing champion Floyd May Weather and UFC champion Mc Gregor received flaks from critics after the mega bout, Usman sees nothing wrong in the contest. He said sports generally was about entertainment and that was exactly what the duo did and luckily for them, it was a mega pay but no contest some sort.“If such opportunity comes my way, I don’t see anything wrong in going for such a contest between two different sport that shares some similarities,” he responded. The UFC is the biggest competition in MMA, where competitors combine boxing, kickboxing, jiu-jitsu, wrestling and other disciplines while fighting in an octagonal cage.Usman, 31, produced the performance of his career to dominate long-reigning welterweight champion Woodley. He extended his winning streak to 14 and maintained his unbeaten record in the UFC.In his post-match press conference he revealed that before the match, he had fractured his foot and had been walking around in a supportive boot all week. The trend is illustrated in UFC’s price – the competition was bought in 2001 for $2m by the Fertita brothers. They sold it to a group of firms in 2016 for $4bn, according to Forbes business magazine.Share this:FacebookRedditTwitterPrintPinterestEmailWhatsAppSkypeLinkedInTumblrPocketTelegramlast_img read more

Can Music Save MySpace?

first_imgYesterday, amid all the news of Twitter’s arrival into both Microsoft’s Bing and the Google search engine, another major announcement was being made. MySpace is giving up on trying to be a major social network. According to MySpace CEO, Owen Van Natta, Facebook is no longer their competition. “We’re focused on a different space,” he says. That “different space,” as it turns out, is music…and it really isn’t all that different, especially considering MySpace’s roots. If anything, this major overhaul of the social network is an attempt to return the site to becoming the popular entertainment hub it once was. MySpace: Remember When it Was “A Place for Music?” When MySpace hit the scene back in 2003, local bands – especially indie rock bands – were among the first to create profiles on the social network. Their presence immediately began to attract a young, hip crowd of users who were interested in following pop culture, and, in particular, the up-and-coming artists they discovered while browsing through the network. Only eight months after its launch, MySpace began to experience exponential growth, as its users created profiles and friended others who would then, in turn, invite more users to join the social network. Thanks to the “network effect,” MySpace soon became the place to be online. Everyone was there. But at the same time that MySpace was having its heyday, another social networking site was being created. Although still in its infancy in 2004, a Harvard student named Mark Zuckerberg began writing the code for what would eventually become Facebook, now the world’s largest social network. Over recent months, we’ve seen the mass exodus from MySpace to the more popular – and more populated – Facebook. Studies have shown that those left actively engaging on MySpace now tend to be younger, lower-income users. Researcher Danah Boyd pointed out, somewhat controversially, that the differences between the two networks, MySpace and Facebook, went further than age and income – they involved your “social class,” too. Tired of being compared to Facebook in this way and certainly tired of hemorrhaging its users, MySpace CEO Van Natta has plans to turn the sinking ship around. After taking over the company six months ago, he’s been busy arranging new partnerships for the one-time king of social networks. These partnerships aim to bring the focus back to music, and less on socializing. New Music Initiatives: iLike, Videos, Artist DashboardsOne of the most notable new initiatives involves MySpace’s iLike integration. After being acquired by MySpace in August, many wondered why iLike wasn’t becoming a part of the MySpace network. Actually it was, but Van Natta didn’t want to disclose that information at the time. But now, the iLike acquisition is beginning to make sense. Through iLike music video widgets, now popular installations on other social networks like Facebook and Orkut, the videos – and, most importantly, their ads – can be streamed on other sites while the revenue generated returns to MySpace. Even though many of the users watching these videos now may be lost forever to MySpace, they’re helping the company regain its footing through their streams.MySpace’s entire music video vault, one of the most popular features on the social network, has also been integrated with iLike. In August, comScore reported 45 million people watched 340 million videos during the course of the month. It only makes sense for MySpace to capitalize on that activity, which is why the company has now launched MySpace Music Videos, an online video archive where users can not only watch videos from their favorite artists, but with a click, purchase the song or ringtone from Amazon or iTunes. Meanwhile, pre-roll, post-roll, and overlay ads help to monetize the content. In addition, to cater to the musicians, bands, and labels who make MySpace their home, the network has also launched “Artist Dashboards.” These online analytical tools track the fans’ demographics by age and location, the total number of plays per song, profile views and more. Every artist with a MySpace profile is given free access to these tools. Facebook is Becoming Less Personal and More Pro… Related Posts Is it Enough? The question that remains, of course, is whether or not MySpace’s re-branding efforts will be enough to keep the site from going under. Although MySpace still had a healthy 64 million users in August of this year, that number is 12 million fewer than it did at the same time last year. Meanwhile, Facebook climbed to 300 million worldwide that same month. Can MySpace entice people to come back to the network through its new music-based initiatives? It’s too soon to tell at the moment whether the strategy will work or not, but it’s definitely the network’s best shot. By capitalizing on what remains the most popular activity on MySpace to date (music and video), the company hopes to become more of a niche site for socializing around music instead of a site for just socializing. The newly launched features are just a part of the company’s overall efforts in this direction, too. Still to come are concert ticket and merchandise sales, although no details or launch dates have been given for those features as of yet. While these efforts may not ever allow MySpace to reclaim its status as the number one social network – that ship seems to have sailed – they could definitely help the network maintain profitability. And at the end of the day, that’s all that’s really needed. It’s not about how many users you have, it’s about how much money you can make off of those that you do. Upcoming Film Festival Deadlines (Summer 2015)

first_img  Late Deadline  07/11/2015  $100.00 USD Take a look at the top upcoming film festival deadlines slated for the second quarter of 2015, and get a leg up on when and where to make your submissions.Top Image Courtesy of Leeds International Film Festival. Many of us here at PremiumBeat are filmmakers and videographers, and we occasionally send our work off to film festivals to reach a wider audience. Is this something that you’re interested in doing as well? If so, we’ve got just what you need. After this latest rush of film festival submissions, we felt that we should present our readers with a list of the top film festival deadlines for each quarter of the year.Words of WisdomBefore we get started, we do want to impart some wisdom to our readers, and it has to do with the all-mighty dollar. We all know that being a filmmaker or videographer can be an expensive career choice, and film festivals just add to that cost. Most festivals average around $50 per submission, which really adds up if you’re submitting to several at once. But you really need to be aware of hidden costs if your film is selected to play at one of these festivals. Many film festivals do not accept Vimeo links or DVD copies for final screening. Rather they require HDCAM (High-Definition Video Digital Recording), DCP (Digital Cinema Package) and even 35mm prints — and the transfer rates for each of these is not cheap. Luckily, each festival will inform you of their desired final screening media options as you make your submission. Remember to budget for all of these costs.Image from Tribeca Film FestivalUpcoming Film Festival DeadlinesAs we are currently already in the second quarter of the year, we’ve missed a few deadlines that passed at the end of May, such as Toronto International Film Festival, New York City Independent Film Festival and American Documentary Film Festival. Please read each official festival mission statement below. Cong. will form the next govt. in Rajasthan: Pilot

first_imgRajasthan Congress president Sachin Pilot on Thursday said the party will come to power in the State after the Assembly elections later this year, while accusing Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje of ignoring people’s plight. He was speaking at the Congress’s ‘Sankalp Rally’ in Dungarpur district’s Sagwara area. Congress president Rahul Gandhi also addressed the rally. “Congress is going to form the government in Rajasthan and you will feel that it is your own government,” Mr. Pilot said. ‘CM nowhere to be seen’Training his guns at Ms. Raje, he said the Chief Minister was nowhere to be seen when children died due to malnutrition near Udaipur, infants died in Banswara and farmers committed suicide. He alleged that law and order situation in Rajasthan had deteriorated during her tenure. “Every day 8-10 rapes take place, atrocities against Dalits and others take place and the crime rate has also grown in Rajasthan,” the Congress leader said. Mr. Pilot claimed that Ms. Raje’s pre-poll tour, ‘Rajasthan Gaurav Yatra’, had proved to be a flop with the High Court banning the use of public money for it and poor public response. “People have understood her (Raje). She had a golden opportunity (to serve the people) as her party (BJP) had got a huge mandate (in the last elections) but she betrayed the people,” he said.Mr. Pilot also targeted the Chief Minister over her claim that ₹17,000 crore were spent in Jhalawar district, her constituency, during her tenure. The Chief Minister should tell where the ₹17,000 crore went if the collector feels that the district is backward, he said.last_img read more

Brown Field Municipal airport in Otay Mesa celebrates its 100th anniversary

first_img KUSI Newsroom October 22, 2018 KUSI Newsroom, OTAY MESA (KUSI) – The Brown Field Municipal Airport in Otay Mesa is celebrating its 100th anniversary. The air field has had a variety of uses since it was opened in 1918. Deputy Director of Airports, Rod Propst, told us all about the history of Brown Field.SanDiego.gov outlined the history of Brown Field with the following description:Brown Field is located 1.5 miles north of the U.S.-Mexico border in the Otay Mesa community of the City of San Diego. The airport, originally named East Field in honor of Army Maj. Whitten J. East, opened in 1918 when the U.S. Army established an aerial gunnery and aerobatics school in order to relieve congestion at North Island.Maj. East completed flight training at the Army Signal Corps Station, Rockwell Field on North Island before flying over the front lines in France during World War I. He was killed in an auto accident in 1918 while in command of Mitchel Field in New York at the age of 25.From 1918-1919, pilots flying the Curtis JN-4D Jenny trained at East Field. After World War I, the military maintained control of East Field for touch-and-go landings and radio-controlled target drone experiments. In 1943, the U.S. Navy took over the airfield and changed the name to Naval Auxiliary Air Station (NAAS) Otay Mesa. Later that year, the name was changed again to NAAS Brown Field in honor of Navy Commander Melville S. Brown, who was killed in a plane crash near Descanso, Calif., in 1936. Lt. Cmdr. Brown had served as the commanding officer of the USS Truxtun (DD-229) when the ship was commissioned in 1921, and later was the executive officer of the aircraft carrier USS Lexington (CV-2). Between 1943 and 1946, the Army and Navy utilized NAAS Brown Field for training in various aircraft, including the P-38 Lightning, F4F and FM1 Wildcat, TBF and TBM Avenger, F6F Hellcat and PB4Y Privateer. In 1946, the Navy decommissioned Brown Field and turned it over to San Diego County as surplus. The County ended up renting portions of the former base for use as a chicken farm. Chula Vista High School was established on the airport property in 1946.In 1951, the Navy reopened Brown Field due to the increased military activity from the Korean War. In 1954, Brown Field was again commissioned and designated a NAAS with the mission to provide facilities to support regular operations of fleet aircraft, assigned missile programs and fleet carrier landing practice. In 1955, NAAS Brown was home to one utility squadron, two anti-submarine warfare squadrons, a fleet aircraft service squadron (FASRON) and a Regulus air missile unit. The following year, the base was home to two utility squadrons, VU-3 and VU-7, Commander Utility Wing Pacific (COMUTWINGPAC), FASRON 4 detachment and a ground control approach unit.Aircraft that operated at NAAS Brown Field include the F6F Hellcat, F9F Cougar, SNB, R4D Skytrain, JD-1 Invader, P2V Neptune and FJ Fury. On Nov. 2, 1954, the Convair XFY-1 Pogo made a transitional flight from vertical takeoff to horizontal flight, then back to a vertical landing at Brown Field. In 1957, Brown Field was selected as a site for one of the Vanguard Earth Satellite Tracking Stations. On Sept. 1, 1962, the Navy transferred ownership of Brown Field to the City of San Diego, with the condition that it remains an airport for the use and benefit of the public. During the mid- to late-1960s Pacific Southwest Airlines (PSA), an airline based in San Diego, trained its pilots at Brown Field using Piper Arrows, Comanches, Aztecs and Beech Bonanzas. PSA also had a contract to train Lufthansa pilots at Brown Field. In 1970, the Lufthansa training moved to Phoenix, where it still operates today.Today, Brown Field is a busy general aviation airport. General aviation encompasses all aviation except air carrier and military, although the military continues to maintain a strong presence. The types of general aviation aircraft that operate at Brown Field include private, corporate, charter, air ambulance, law enforcement, fire rescue, flight training, cargo, skydiving, banner towing, and airships. The Federal Aviation Administration (link is external) has classified Brown Field as a reliever airport for San Diego International Airport (link is external) – Lindbergh Field. A reliever airport is an airport that serves general aviation aircraft that might otherwise use a congested air carrier airport. Airline passengers benefit by experiencing fewer delays due to air traffic congestion.Airfield Information Posted: October 22, 2018center_img Updated: 10:28 AM Categories: Good Morning San Diego, Local San Diego News FacebookTwitter Brown Field Municipal airport in Otay Mesa celebrates its 100th anniversarylast_img read more
