Hunger strike against HIV

first_imgActivist Criselda Kananda is on a month- long fast to raise awareness of HIV ahead of World Aids Day. (Image: Question Everything) MEDIA CONTACTS • Criselda Kananda JT Communication Solutions +27 11 788 7632/1 [email protected] RELATED ARTICLES • HIV/Aids in South Africa • Lennox sings for HIV/Aids • Loving life, fighting Aids • Preventing HIV with OneLoveNosimilo NdlovuSouth African media personality and social activist Criselda Kananda has begun a month-long fast to radically increase awareness of the HIV pandemic ahead of World Aids Day on 1 December 2009.The fast will last from 20 October to 20 November and will see Kananda drinking only water, and praying for two hours a day.Kananda has garnered a strong South African fan base for her motivational show on national radio station Metro FM, on Wednesday and Thursday evenings.HIV positive herself, Kananda was diagnosed in 1998 and has since worked to inspire South Africans in the same situation, showing them that despite the virus, a full and fulfilled life is possible.“I want to bring the ‘I’ back into HIV, because judging by the sexually transmitted infection statistics, the issue is not just about promiscuity but about losing the sense of personal power to a disease,” she said.According to the national Department of Health more than 4-million people receive treatment for STIs in South Africa every year. The strong association between HIV and other STIs is attributed to multiple sex partners, and not using condoms. The Department of Health is determined to decrease this number by educating people on the importance of using condoms to prevent infection and seeking treatment when infected.Through her radio show and her work as an inspirational speaker, Kananda calls on HIV-positive South Africans to overcome their fear of seeking help, being judged and condemned, stigmatised and discriminated against.Healthy and symptom-freeIn the decade since Kananda became an HIV activist, she has lived a healthy, symptom-free and positive life. She has made it a goal to learn and understand HIV better, studying immunity and Aids progression, and reading the available research on nutrition and behaviour. She has delved into psychoneuroimmunology, the study of the interaction between human psychology and the body’s immune system, and positive living.Over the years Kananda has gained respect from leaders such as President Jacob Zuma, who said “Criselda gives hope and encouragement to millions”, and former president Nelson Mandela, who described her as “the light for the world to see”.She has also been lauded for her work as strategic advisor for Zithande, the award-winning governmental HIV and Aids campaign.Zithande is based on the premise that individuals who love, care for and respect themselves pass on that positivity to others. “HIV has taught me that my health is my responsibility,” said Kananda.Unwavering dedicationThe activist left a successful career in sales and marketing, where she headed the direct marketing business unit of the South African Post Office, to become a wellness advocate. She has been invited as a speaker and presented papers at many conferences and meetings including a meeting of the Southern African Development Community health ministers on wellness. She started a radio talk show called Positive Talk in 2003 on local Johannesburg radio station Kaya FM. The show focuses on how HIV and Aids contribute to health, wellness and socioeconomic imbalances.Kananda now believes the time has come to dedicate all her efforts to powerful action, with the hope that it will prove to be a turning point for the disease.“I have now reached a point where I am asking for God’s intervention in putting a stop to the spread of HIV on World Aids Day on 1 December,” Kananda said. “I am calling upon South African believers from different denominations to join me as I call upon God’s intervention, because the number of people dying every month is not acceptable.“A promising face for HIVKananda said she strives to look good at all times as she believes that HIV has been given far too negative a face. “For most people being invisible is seen as the best way to cope with the HIV infection,” she said. She continues to provide hope by educating HIV-positive people on simple ways of living a positive life, encouraging them to adopt a holistic approach to wellness and to focus on a personal revolution.“To me this means looking after one’s body, mind and soul, being responsible for our own actions and choices. I believe that we need to restore dignity and moral ethics to African people if ever we are to win this human tragedy. And most importantly eradicate poverty and helplessness.”HIV epidemicSouth Africa has one of the fastest growing HIV epidemics in the world. According to the 2008 South African National HIV Prevalence, HIV Incidence, Behaviour and Communication Survey by the Human Sciences Research Council an estimated 5.2-million people were living with HIV and Aids in 2008. About 250 000 South Africans died of Aids-related illnesses in 2008.National prevalence is around 11%, with certain age groups being particularly vulnerable. An estimated one in three women between the ages of 25 and 29, and over 25% of men between the ages of 30 and 34, are HIV positive. In South Africa the main mode of HIV transmission is between heterosexual couples, with infection between mother and child being the other main infection route.last_img read more

SaaS: Can SMBs be Convinced?

first_imgSaaS is scaring away SMB customers.  On the one hand, SMBs are intrigued with the business proposition offered by on-demand solutions provided as a service, but when asked directly about SaaS, there is a feeling of suspicion and hesitancy.  Much of the fear people have is just the term SaaS. These are the results of a new IDC report called “The Adoption of Software as a Service in Small and Medium-Sized Businesses: Perception Versus Reality (March 2007)“.  The survey was conducted with 614 small businesses and 418 medium-sized businesses.SMBs are worried about security and a lock-in of regular monthly payments.  While SaaS providers have done a good job in addressing security issues in their applications, the general perception is that the problem still exists.“The concept of software as a service is intuitively appealing as a method of software delivery to small and medium-sized businesses, but they have not been adopting SaaS as quickly as originally anticipated, even though the reality of their move to SaaS is greater than their perception,” says Merle Sandler, senior research analyst in the Small and Medium Business Markets program at IDC.Despite the hesitancy, SaaS is seeing growth among SMBs.  5.1% of small companies and 15.2% of medium-sized companies expect to adopt a SaaS solution within the next 12 months.  Small businesses most often cite CRM as their first test application of the technology, while medium-sized businesses tend to cite payroll and HR applications.last_img read more

Career in sports

first_imgThe India-Pakistan cricket match during the T20 world cup this year brought the country to a stand still. Work came to a halt and all people could talk about was the match. A few days later when the Indian team lifted the world cup, there was a sense of euphoria,The India-Pakistan cricket match during the T20 world cup this year brought the country to a stand still. Work came to a halt and all people could talk about was the match. A few days later when the Indian team lifted the world cup, there was a sense of euphoria and victory in the nation. Celebrations went on for days and it felt like we had won a war. Such is the importance of sports in our country.Though it is true that cricket is more popular than other sports, but with the exceptionally good performance of the Indian contingent at the Commonwealth Games in 2010, other sports are seen in a new light. A career of a sports person is accompanied with its share of glamour and fame but this does not come easy. Focus, hard work and determination are important for a player to excel. Being on top of your game and making sacrifices to reach there are just part of the journey.Developing an interest in a particular sport is important from an early age. Falling in love with the game and enjoying it is key to developing a career in that field. Proper training is required once you realise you want to develop your talent in a particular sport. Apart from facilities, it is crucial to find a good coach at the right age. Once you are on the right track, no one can stop you from turning professional and making a career in this field. This industry has many other opportunities and one can be part of the sports brigade by choosing to work in a sports related field. Opportunities that can be found within both public and private sectors offering sports enthusiasts a place in this dynamic industry. Sports media and marketing, team administration, coaching, sports engineering, sports medicine and nutrition and sports law, are few options to choose from.”We are in-charge of everything outside the game for a sports person, such as, events, media, branding and public appearance. We are the spokesperson for the players we represent and the office for all non sport related matters,” says Latika Khaneja, Director, Collage Sports Management, while discussing a career in sports management. Since this is still a nascent industry, what shape and trajectory of growth it acquires depends on new entrepreneurs that have entered the field and find reasonable space to innovate along the way.Another line of work emerging is the overlap of sports and other professions. One can specialise in a profession, such as, law, medicine and journalism and then focus on sports. Discussing medicine and sports, IPS Oberoi, sports orthopedic, Aretemis Health Institute, Gurgaon, says, “A sports physician can either be a team doctor or a specialised physician. They look after sports injuries. The remuneration depends on their experience. It may range from anything between Rs 5 lakh to Rs 10 lakh per annum.”The advantages of a career related to the sports industry is that you are working with people who are passionate about their work. They are mostly young people looking for a challenge because this industry is still away from the conventional thing to do. As these professions are still evolving and have no set definitions, there is room for innovation and originality. These professions can be pretty lucrative also. But there is a flip side to all this to. Sports is still seen as a nonconventional career. Often, youngsters come in only for the glamour and not for the hard work. Finding promising sports persons who are committed and dedicated, is also a challenge. Players and games usually have their share of ups and downs with long lull periods. This being a young industry is highly competitive and keeps one on their toes. The best way to enter any of these fields and decide what you want to specialise in, is to seek a sports-related internship. In the sports industry, internships are critical to young professionals seeking their first job in sports.Today some of the smartest young minds are engaged in sports and sports related activities. An eye for detail, commitment, hard work, efficiency, honesty and the willingness to excel are a prerequisite for anyone wanting to make it big in this industry. All game Mangte Chungneijang Mary Kom, 28, World Boxing Champion. With an inborn passion for sports and a desire to follow your dreams, a career as a sports person can be very lucrative but full of challenges. To excel in this highly competitive career one has to be on top of their game and be prepared to beat all odds. “Being a sports person keeps you healthy, earns you honour and fame. But, at the same time, one has to work very hard, make sacrifices and sometimes even miss out on spending time with family and friends,” says Mary Kom, boxer. Training and acquiring skills are very important in this field. One should choose a specialisation and start working on it from an early age. A number of institutes in India provide training in different sports. Aspirants with sporting abilities can join these institutes after completing their schooling. Excelling in this field and accomplishing your goals gets you a lot of fame and popularity but one has to be prepared for the hard work and sacrifices. The work hours are very long and include Saturdays, Sundays and even holidays. ” If you are gifted and on track don’t give up. You will excel in life,” adds Kom.advertisementadvertisementlast_img read more
