The direction is in line with the order dated April 6, 2020 of a Chief Justice-led division bench, whereby production of sureties by persons who were granted bail on or after March 15, was temporarily waived of in view of the lockdown restrictions. Reiterating the same, the single bench of Justice Abdul Moin on June 19 ordered, “Looking to impediments in arranging sureties because of lockdown, while invoking powers under Article 226 and 227 of the Constitution of India, we deem it appropriate to order that all the accused-applicants whose bail applications came to be allowed on or after 15th March, 2020 but have not been released due to non-availability of sureties as a consequence to lockdown may be released on executing personal bond as ordered by the Court or to the satisfaction of the jail authorities where such accused is imprisoned, provided the accused-applicants undertakes to furnish required sureties within a period of one month from the date of his/her actual release.” The order was passed after the bench noted the many accused-applicants had not been released despite obtaining a favorable order, due to non-availability of sureties. The court was hearing the bail application of one Ankit Gupta, accused of raping a minor girl aged 14 years. The bail plea was allowed on an observation that the medical report of the victim did not indicate any bodily injuries. The bench was also conscious of the conduct of the victim’s mother, who had resiled from pressing charges in another case. The accused had alleged that the victim’s mother was in the habit of lodging FIR and thereafter entering into a compromise with the accused persons. The court remarked that a prima facie case is made out for grant of bail. Case Details: Case Title: Ankit Gupta v. So Far, Push Notifications on the iPhone are a Letdown

first_imgWhen Apple launched the iPhone 3.0 update, we were pretty excited about a number of the new features in the OS, but push notifications, which Apple billed as an alternative to battery-draining background processes, were on the top of our list. After a few weeks with the iPhone 3.0 OS, however, only a very small number of push apps have made it into the store, and even some of the best ones, like BeeJive IM (iTunes link) and the AP Mobile app (iTunes link) suffer from major drawbacks.IM Works, but What About Those Timeouts?BeeJive, for example, is a great IM app – and so are eBuddy (iTunes link) and IM+ with Push (iTunes link), two other push-enabled IM apps that were released in the last few days. These apps are intuitive, connect to most popular IM networks, and work just as advertised. But when it comes to push notifications, there are just too many little things that are holding these apps back.By default, BeeJive, for example, will log you out of your account after just 20 minutes. So once you have finished a chat session, you will just be offline again and no new messages will be pushed to your phone. You can push this timeout limit up to 24 hours, but this setting is buried at the bottom of BeeJive’s long list of options. The eBuddy IM app doesn’t even have this option and just automatically logs you out after 30 minutes. There are probably good technical reasons for this, but this behavior just isn’t what we expected when we first heard about push notifications.News Updates are Nice, but What About Customization? While the AP Mobile app (iTunes link) does push out news updates regularly, it is also a bit of a letdown. There is, for example, no way to customize when you want to get alerts and which alerts you want to get. You can’t just subscribe to tech news, for example, or updates about the latest celebrity deaths. Still no Twitter Apps with PushWe are also still waiting for the first Twitter apps that support push (at least for replies and direct messages), better calendar apps (Remember Milk is the only one in the App Store so far, and it requires a pro account), apps that can push out alerts when an RSS feed updates or when new email arrives, or apps that are simply innovative and beyond our current exepctations.Maybe Push Just Isn’t the Solution? While getting the current updates is nice, compared to having to open the app and see what is new, there is so much more that could be done with this technology. But for the time being, either Apple is holding back the most interesting apps, or developers just aren’t able to use it in really innovative ideas. We have talked to a number of companies that are producing geo-aware apps, for example. But because these developers aren’t able to remotely wake up an app and pull in data about your current location, there really isn’t much that they can do with push notifications at this point. If only the phone could also run cron jobs, for example. Then that could start an application at regular intervals, in addition to push notifications, and developers could do so much more with this technology.Of course, we are still in the early days of push on the iPhone, but so far, we have been quite disappointed with the current crop of apps. Hopefully, this will only be a stopgap solution anyway, and by the time the next generation of iPhones comes around, Apple will just allow apps to run in the background. Littleknown among consumers Huawei has high profile in Canadian tech networks

first_imgTORONTO — Before the arrest of Huawei Technologies’ chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou in Vancouver last weekend, the Chinese company wasn’t a household name in Canada — certainly not in the league of an Apple, Samsung or BlackBerry. However, the Chinese tech giant considered by several of Canada’s allies as a security threat has quietly established itself as an important provider of technology essential to Canada’s telecom infrastructure, a situation that is not likely to change any time soon.  Huawei’s share of the Canadian smartphone market has been tiny — about 3.8 per cent, according to market research from IDC Canada — but outside of Canada the company is a juggernaut, overtaking Apple earlier this year in smartphone sales and employing more than 170,000 people around the world.Founded in 1987 by a former officer of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army, the company has grown at an explosive rate over the past ten years and is projected to post sales of more than US$102 billion in 2018.For Canada’s telecom industry and the federal government in Ottawa, Huawei has long been known as an important equipment supplier — one that U.S. officials consider a significant threat to national security. That’s largely because Huawei is a major supplier of the equipment needed for wireless networks that could potentially be used to gather sensitive information for the Chinese government.“There is ample evidence to suggest that no major Chinese company is independent of the Chinese government and Communist Party — and Huawei, which China’s government and military tout as a ‘national champion’ is no exception,” U.S. Senators Mark Warner and Marco Rubio wrote in October in a letter to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. However, Canadian officials and representatives of major telecom companies have maintained that they have put safeguards in place — long ago, and before the American alarm — to ensure Huawei isn’t a security or privacy threat.Like Canada, the United Kingdom hasn’t moved to ban Huawei from doing business with their networks — despite U.S. warnings that they may be jeopardizing the “Five Eyes” intelligence gathering partnership. Lawrence Surtees, vice-president for communications research at IDC Canada, says Britain and Canada are the second and third most important Five Eyes partners after the United States and ahead of Australia and New Zealand.“My take is, both Ottawa and London are in a position to say … we do lots with you in the intelligence sharing and we’re not going to jeopardize our networks. We know what to do.”Surtees says Huawei equipment has already been used in at least five Canadian wireless networks that use fourth-generation LTE technology, and it would be expensive to replace.Huawei is also working with Bell and Telus to develop equipment for 5G wireless networks that are expected to become increasingly vital to carriers and their customers over the next decade.“The magnitude of the contracts that Huawei has here would be a factor, with the Canadian carriers saying to Ottawa that it’s kind of too late now,” Surtees says. There are very few alternative suppliers of 5G network equipment to chose from, he adds.Ericsson of Sweden, the main equipment supplier for the Rogers wireless networks, and Nokia of Finland are also global players in Canada but Surtees considers Huawei to be the market leader. It has been in operation in Canada since 2008, and currently employs about 960 people in this country — about 600 in research and development.Huawei’s Canadian head office is in the Toronto area in Markham, Ont. while its Canada Research Centre is based in Ottawa. The company also has research facilities in Markham, Waterloo, Ont., Montreal, Vancouver and Edmonton.Huawei also makes smartphones for current wireless networks, sold in Canada by Bell, Rogers, Telus, and Videotron under their main brands as well as some secondary brands such as Virgin Mobile, Fido and Koodo.David Paddon, The Canadian Presslast_img read more

Two Hindu Sena men arrested for forcibly shutting meat shops

first_imgGururgam: Four days after Hindu Sena men, armed with rods, sticks, and swords, forced meat shops to close in wake of the Navratri, Gurugram police have arrested another two accused, including a history-sheeter with 19 cases registered against him.The duo has been identified as Rajesh and Pramod. Rajesh, earlier, has been booked under 420 (theft), 120 (criminal conspiracy) 279 (rash driving), 337 (endangering the safety of others) of the Indian penal code. Also Read – After eight years, businessman arrested for kidnap & murderEarlier the law enforcement officials had arrested Rakesh and Mohit in the case and were charged under sections 148 (rioting with deadly weapons), 149 (unlawful assembly), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 25-54-59 of the arms act. While the police continue to cracks down on the rogue elements, most of the citizens have defied the meat ban in the city. There are shops and restaurants which are selling their inventories as a sizable number of customers are coming to buy non-vegetarian items. Also Read – Two brothers held for snatchingsHowever, certain big shops, which are registered with Gurugram meat market union, have closed their shutter for Navratri and have also announced that their shops will be closed on every Tuesday. Owners of these meat units have maintained that they have taken this decision out of respect for religious sentiments than fear of rogue outfits. “Some of my colleagues decided to not open their shops during Navratras as they felt it was not appropriate for them to hurt the religious sentiments. But, I have decided to open my shop as I have been getting customers from all religious communities. Ultimately it depends upon your choice and intent. Who are we to hurt any one’s religious sentiments,” said Shakib who operates a meat shop near Jama Masjid in Sadar Bazaar area. Additionally, most of the small meat shops have decided not to buckle under fear, and continue with their business. At the Sikanderpur meat mandi, there are meat units open even in scorching heat. “We do not have proper space for selling our items. For many, the place may be unhygienic and dirty. But, the Sikanderpur Mandi has its loyal customers. The meat sellers over here have not buckled under the fear of powerful builders. How can we be cowed down by few rogue elements?” said Tariq. Not far from the meat mandi, the famous roadside Biryani restaurants were also functioning in Sikanderpur area. “We have been getting a lot of customers even during Navratras. Even though there is a slight reduction at the end of the day, we still break even during Navratras,” said Ashfaq, an employee at Al-Shaifa Biryani restaurant.last_img read more

Giancarlo Stanton Was Made For The Home Run Derby

He also hit 18 of the 19 longest, with five carrying at least 490 feet and 31 traveling at least 450. It might well have been the greatest single exhibition of raw home run-hitting power in baseball history.Of course, such herculean feats are nothing new for Stanton — he’s widely known around baseball as the hardest-hitting player in the game, a man seemingly put on this earth to murder baseballs. And it’s a reputation only enhanced by the presence of Statcast, MLB’s (relatively) new radar-based tracking system, which has turned the physics of hard-hit balls into something approaching fetishization.Stanton is the poster child for the Statcast era. Where other players once made RBIs or steals into calling cards, Stanton has fashioned the exit-velo leaderboard — in other words, the “hitting the ball real hard” leaderboard — into his own personal jurisdiction, and fans revel in the arcana. (Did you know one of his home runs last night departed the bat at 120.4 miles per hour? That’s nuts!) In an era where we can quantify the speed and angle of every ball off the bat, Stanton is the right hitter at exactly the right historical moment. So, does that make him the greatest power hitter ever? He might be on his way. If we look at his career isolated power — essentially his total bases per at-bat, but tossing out those wimpy singles — relative to the MLB average for nonpitchers, Stanton ranks 11th since 1901, trailing Mark McGwire, Barry Bonds and eight Hall of Famers. Stanton is also still just 26, so he’ll have a handful more prime years to move up the list before tailing off in late-career decline. 2015Todd Frazier39✓ 7Jimmie Foxx.284.125+.159 YEARWINNERLONGEST HR YEARPLAYERHOME RUNSWON DERBY? 2015Joc Pederson39 2Mark McGwire.325.146+.179 2011Adrian Gonzalez31 2008Josh Hamilton35 2016Todd Frazier42 2007Vladimir Guerrero503 12Johnny Mize.250.125+.125 1996Barry Bonds451 PLAYERCAREER ISOMLB AVERAGEISO VS. Bizarre as it sounds given his outrageous batted-ball numbers, Stanton has suffered through a down first half, hitting around .220 and flirting with the replacement level before embarking on a scorching start to July. Even after that turnaround, his 116 wRC+ would be the fourth-lowest ever by a Derby winner during their victorious season.Luckily for Stanton, though, there is no Home Run Derby curse. (Seriously, stop suggesting that’s a thing. Stop it.) And more to the point, nobody hits the ball that hard for long with so few hits to show for it. Stanton’s Statcast numbers — and more conventional metrics such as contact rate and line-drive rate — might be down a bit from their lofty 2015 heights, but Stanton still figures to be one of baseball’s better hitters in the second half of the season.
